VP Hi-Performance API GL-5 SAE 80w140 Gear Oil is a mineral base, high performance, limited slip, extreme pressure gear oil. To begin with, we design it with anti-scuff, anti-wear and extreme pressure properties. As a result, it provides outstanding protection against low speed/high torque wear.

We recommend its use in heavy-duty axles and heavy-duty non-synchronized manual transmissions. Additionally, we recommend it for limited slip differentials that call for a GL-5 extreme pressure gear oil.

Our low odor 80w140 gear oil formula meets the requirements of most differential and manual transmissions that require an API GL-5 gear oil, including:
  • API-GL-5
  • API MT-1
  • MIL-PRF-2105E
  • Mack GO-J
  • PG-2 Limited Slip
Always consult your engine builder or owner's manual for the correct service category and/or viscosity grade.

GL GEAR OIL GUIDE

What Does GL-5 Mean?

GL-5 is a gear oil classification developed for high-load driveline applications such as differentials, axles, and certain manual transmissions. The term “GL” stands for Gear Lubricant, while the number identifies the level of protection and extreme pressure performance the oil is designed to provide.

GL-5

HIGH LOAD / EXTREME PRESSURE PROTECTION

  • Built for high torque and heavy load conditions
  • Commonly used in differentials and axles
  • Higher extreme pressure additive content
  • Helps reduce wear under severe load
GL-4

MODERATE LOAD PROTECTION

  • Designed for moderate load applications
  • Common in some synchronized manual transmissions
  • Lower extreme pressure additive levels
  • Suitable for lighter driveline stress

GL-4 VS GL-5

What is the difference between GL-4 and GL-5? The main difference between GL-4 and GL-5 gear oil is the level of extreme pressure protection. GL-5 gear oil contains additional additives designed to protect gears operating under higher torque and heavier load conditions, making it more suitable for differentials, heavy-duty axles, and severe driveline applications.

EXTREME PRESSURE PROTECTION

How Does GL-5 Gear Oil Protect?

GL-5 gear oil uses extreme pressure additives designed to protect loaded gear surfaces under severe torque and heavy driveline load conditions.

01

REDUCES METAL-TO-METAL CONTACT

Extreme pressure additives help form a protective layer between loaded gear surfaces during severe operation.

02

HELPS PREVENT GEAR SCUFFING

Anti-scuff chemistry helps reduce surface wear caused by high torque and shock-load conditions.

03

PROTECTS UNDER HEAVY LOAD

Designed to maintain driveline protection during sustained load, heat, and severe operating conditions.
